All About Me

My struggle with fatigue and brain fog started back when I was in high school, although I didn’t recognize it at the time. I look back and remember having moments when I just felt completely out of it in the middle of the day. It was like I was physically there, but not mentally. I didn’t really understand what it was, so I just kept on going.

Once I was in college, everything was so fast paced, that I didn’t even notice how tired I really was. I had gone from a somewhat “clean” diet - my mom was very big on fruits and veggies, but we would still have all sorts of grains every day. She never cooked anything out of a box though, and I am grateful for that. But, because I had felt deprived of all the “fun” foods my friends had all been eating all those years, I went a little nuts. My freshman year my breakfast would consist of a Coke and a Butterfinger… thinking about that now makes me want to vomit. I would get broccoli at lunch but would load it up with melted “cheese” thinking I was being all healthy. Dinner and the 2am snacks usually consisted of pizza. Not sure how I didn’t feel worse!

After college, I sort of sailed through the next few years as far as my health was concerned; not super energetic, but I was getting by. That was up until I took a job working nights. That job is what tipped the scales in the wrong direction for me. I felt somewhat fully awake for about an hour a day, but I was almost always out of it. It took a lot of effort to think, let alone move my body.

After about three years, back in 2011, I ended up taking a job in adult education with hours where I was able to actually see the sun and sleep when it was dark. Not long into it, I remember being with two clients, and I was just staring and couldn’t think (luckily, they were engaged in an activity, so they didn’t notice…. I was very good at hiding it anyway). I also remember thinking that I was just behind on sleep. Yeah, that’s all it was; I just needed a few good nights of sleep. Lucky for me, I had a doctor who caught my hypothyroidism, which at the time, I had never heard of this.  She put me on a small dose of thyroid medication. It was night and day difference! But, of course, unfortunately that was short lived. Once I realized that it was more than just lack of sleep, I started doing my own research (thank you Google!) and self-experimentation.

I tried all sorts of different diets, and these were not to lose weight; although I did have some pesky love handles, I wanted gone, but my fatigue and brain fog were front and center for me. I’ve tried vegetarian, whole 30, gluten free, paleo, keto, and carnivore. I’ve also tried various supplements, which, by the way, I failed to see that what they are is right in the name – supplements. They are meant to supplement, not be the main piece. That took hundreds (probably thousands) of dollars to realize.

I also have changed my thyroid medications, both dose and type, over the years and have settled on what works for me. On top of that, I have had two children during all of this, which has definitely contributed to the fatigue. They are a bit older now, so I can’t blame them anymore .

My health is still a work-in-progress, but I am getting a lot closer to my goals than I ever have before.

There are several things I have learned from all these different diets… one, there is no one-size-fits-all diet. We are all different (background, lifestyle, personal preferences, etc.), so why should our diets be the same? For me, paleo, keto, and carnivore worked best. I have a horrible sweet tooth, and unfortunately, I cannot just eat one cookie (my husband thinks I’m crazy, but honestly, he’s the crazy one. How can anyone stop at just one??). If I stay away from the sweet stuff, I feel much better. Two, we all need fat (and no – fat does NOT make you fat) and protein (preferably from animals, but there are other sources), but not necessarily carbs.  Once again, everyone is different, so it just depends, but we can survive and thrive without them. Three, supplements are just that – supplements. There is no one miracle drug/supplement/powder/etc. There is no quick fix. And four, there is a lot more to it than just diet. There are many pieces to the puzzle, including sleep, stress management, play, among others.

I would love to help you put your puzzle together! Get your energy back! Get your mental clarity back! I want to help you have more mental space to enjoy time with your kids/family. I want to help you be able to shine bright during that big meeting you have to lead in front of all your colleagues.
